How to have a relaxing day

Are you reading a book at the moment?

I decided today that I’ve been burning the candle at both ends and at various points along the length of it too. Needs must and all that so I made the decision to take a day off today. I don’t know about you but I am lucky enough to still be working pretty much my usual hours. I do feel fortunate as so many people have been furloughed or are having to self-isolate so that must be pretty tough – losing your normal routine and sense of presence. Other than working I have spent my time off work catching up with house and garden tasks that needed doing, housework, tidying, sorting, gardening, jet-washing and the usual laundry etc.

So today was going to be a day just for me. I do feel sometimes that I neglect my own needs and don’t really think about taking time out to relax.

Today was going to be a day to recharge my batteries and hopefully calm my hyperactive mind that kept me awake pretty much all night last night. Well I woke up at 2am and tried for four hours to get back to sleep before giving up. Oh and if you wondered online shopping slots still aren’t available even at 3 o’clock in the morning!

It was a sunny but breezy day and you know me, I love getting out in the garden, so after having hot cross buns for breakfast and a tidy in the kitchen I decided I would escape reality for a while and read a book. I honestly can’t remember the last time I read a book but it quantifies as history…Anyway my Mum lent me a book by Sophie Kinsella called Twenties girl so I sat in the garden with a cup of tea and read the first chapter and I LOVED it! It really is my cup of tea, I’d forgotten how enjoyable it is to get engrossed in a good read.

I spent a great deal of my afternoon sat outside throwing the ball for our two dogs and got completely lost in my book. Completely immersed in it. It’s a brilliant book by the way I would totally recommend it. I read eight chapters and actually I’ve decided I will take it to bed with me so, as well as reading before I go to sleep, if I wake up in the middle of the night I might be better reading a book rather than stressing and trying to force myself back to sleep.

So how has today made me feel? I honestly feel a whole lot calmer and relaxed than I have done in quite a while so I know it has done me good. I feel like I’ve actually enjoyed a day off work rather than spending it just doing chores that need doing and I feel rested and rejuvenated. I feel so happy that I made the decision to take a day off. Spending time outside has done me good too as it’s so enriching being outside in the fresh air surrounded by plants and nature and, of course, two smiley dogs! Hopefully having fresh air may help me sleep better too!

      • I can remember not sleeping so I could read, but I can’t remember what the book was 😂
        I’ve not read Harry Potter! Does that make me bad? It’s just never interested me … J K Rowling is inspiring though 💗


      • No it doesn’t make you bad at all my kids were school age when the books came out so that’s why we bought them otherwise I may not have 😊


  1. Hi Fiona, I’m glad I got to catch up on reading some blog posts this morning, especially yours. This one hit me in the feels as they say because I did the same thing yesterday afternoon. My work is all at a computer, so to get away from it I got good and dirty working in my garden, while my sweet dog supervised, and then she and I just sat in the sun and watched all the wildlife in our backyard for close to an hour. It was peaceful and just what I needed. Thanks for sharing this post and reminding me to be grateful for the simple pleasures I enjoyed yesterday 🙂
