Connecting with Nature
Amidst the non-stop rushing around and let’s be honest, sometimes chaotic theme of our modern lives, there’s a genuine tranquility that comes from tending to a garden. As we lovingly nurture our courgettes, runner beans and tomatoes, a profound connection with the earth takes root. Witnessing the tender growth from seed to vibrant plant truly evokes a sense of wonder and achievement, reminding us of the beauty and power of nature.

The Taste of Homegrown Goodness
Do you remember going to Pick Your Own farms as a child? If so, do you recall how luscious those juicy red strawberries tasted? If anyone remembers it – we used to visit Priory Farm in Nutfield, Surrey. Pick Your Own was such a joyful and exciting activity! Even now, there’s a distinct difference between inhaling the scent of home grown tomatoes and the non-existent aroma of a mass produced vegetable purchased from a supermarket. In the embrace of our own garden, the dedication and care we shower upon our vegetables infuse them with an incredible taste! It’s similar to when you eat a meal or a cake that someone has made with love, you really can taste the difference, can’t you. Honestly, it’s such a great feeling to eat food that you have nurtured and tended.
This year we’ve already harvested quite a few delicious courgettes, we’ve also got an abundant crop of tasty runner beans that will be ready soon. Also in the bed are broccoli, purple sprouting broccoli and tender stem broccoli (yes we like broccoli!!) We also have beetroot and tomatoes that are coming along well. in the bed I’ve also got marigolds and nasturtiums growing, which as well as looking pretty will help to attract pollinators to the area and hopefully any caterpillars or other insects will munch on them instead of our produce!

Health and Well-being
Beyond the fabulous feeling you get from home growing, it’s great to know that cultivating our own vegetables also immerses us with a huge heap of health benefits. Free from yucky pesticides and additives, our garden’s produce is also a nourishing gift to our bodies. Not only that, the therapeutic act of gardening itself serves as a enjoyable form of exercise – which can be hard to find, so it’s win win with both physical well-being and a feeling of calm and tranquility.
Embracing an Eco-Friendly Lifestyle
Choosing to grow our own vegetables lessens the environmental impact by reducing the carbon footprint associated with food miles. Embracing sustainable gardening practices, such as composting and rainwater harvesting, further enhances our role as stewards of the earth, contributing to a greener and more sustainable world. You’ll Save Money Too!
If you’ve wondered whether it’s expensive to grow your own food, you may be surprised to know that you’ll save so much money by growing your own. You’ll need an initial outlay of gardening tools and perhaps a raised bed. Once your beds are ready you’ll just need to choose your vegetables and buy the seeds. As our garden thrives and flourishes, we’re starting to witness a continuous supply of tasty vegetables that are a great addition to our meals. I’d love to encourage you to give it a try and experience embrace the heartwarming feeling of being partially self-sufficient.
Family Bonding and Encouraging a Love of Nature in Children
As a child I remember feeling proud to be trusted with a little section of the garden, so why not encourage your children to join in with the magical process of growing flowers or vegetables. Little ones will marvel at the miracle of growth, as well as learning vital lessons of patience and responsibility, you may even get them to try vegetables that they thought they wouldn’t enjoy, if they have watched them grow! It’s a great opportunity for some family time, away from the temptation of the TV too!

Gardening is Great!
Spending time in the garden, is so much more than just enjoying fresh air, it’s a place to embrace a love of nature and can be a really calm and peaceful place (of course if you’re lucky enough not to be near a busy road.) It’s really easy to lose yourself in the garden, forget your worries for just a while and appreciate the simple things. So pop on your gardening gloves, grab yourself a spade and why not give it a go!
