What to do on a day off

I think we often feel guilty, almost to a point of feeling selfish, about spending time doing just what we want to do. We worry about what other people will think and whether we might be deemed as lazy. Well personally I think those thoughts can do one because sometimes we need to put ourselves first.

I can honestly say I’ve given myself a day off today! I’ve had a few days off work and done lovely things during this past week, such as meeting up with friends, going out for lunch, going to the beach, going car shopping (well in all fairness that was just a bit of window shopping as we decided we don’t really need one and even if we did, we can’t really afford it right now anyway.)

I couldn’t have chosen a nicer week weather-wise so I am feeling quite blessed as I do love the sunshine, summer is most definitely my favourite time of year. We decided to have a small impromptu get-together for my Mum’s birthday yesterday so that was the perfect reason to make me blitz the house and garden, cut the grass etc. Not that I should need an excuse to do housework but it’s not my favourite thing to do if I’m honest. I love the end product and I love my house when it has just been cleaned but sometimes it is hard work isn’t it.

We had actually planed to go out for a meal last night but after the last few days of warm weather, we decided to have a little ‘do’ here instead. Although I do love to have dinner out, when there is a few of you, it’s a little harder to engineer with the perfect time for everyone and also chances are we would be given a long table which means you would only get to talk to the people either side or opposite where you are sitting.

Anyway I cooked a lasagne and did some breads and salad and it was lovely, everyone chatted to everyone and it was nice and relaxed.

So my point of this post is to say that today I haven’t done anything much at all. I spent four hours in the hair salon which was a lovely start to the day. This is only the second time I have been to this hairdresser and she is really lovely – and easy to talk to. So I spent four hours having pleasant chat with someone while they coloured, washed, cut and dried my hair. Plus I had a lovely individual pot of tea and a couple of butterscotch crunch biscuits – what a treat! I had quite a decent amount cut off my hair which has made it feel so much nicer and lighter and I love my new hairstyle too!

So to add to my relaxing day, I came home, had salad for lunch and then sat in the garden on my sun lounger for a couple of hours as it was such a beautiful day, obviously playing with the dogs as well. I did left over lasagne and salad for dinner so in all I haven’t really done much at all. I don’t feel like I wasted my day though, in fact the complete opposite, I feel happy that I was able to have the time to not do much.

I haven’t done anything particularly productive today – or have I? Perhaps being kind to myself, playing with my dogs and doing things I enjoy is a productive use of my time. I don’t feel guilty I just feel really contented and relaxed and I think we all need to take a little time out for ourselves sometimes because it’s good for us.

What do you like to do on a day off?

  1. It sounds like you had such a wonderful well-deserved day of relaxation, Fiona! It is such beautiful weather, perfect for chilling out in the garden and I imagine your new hair cut looks gorgeous 🙂 I think it is so nice to take some time out of our busy lives and just enjoy it at our own pace. Hope you have a lovely day and great to read your update! ❤ xx

    • Ahh thank you for taking the time to read Bexa, I hope you are doing ok 🙂 I am quite pleased with my hair but I wish I had the confidence to go shorter, it’s hard when you don’t know what will suit! Your hair always looks so lovely, I would love to go that short xx
