Using a keyboard with an i-Pad

I was lucky enough to receive a keyboard for use with my iPad. Well to be honest I had been dropping a few little hints – well actually I had been dropping lots of huge hints about how it is quite hard to type fast on an iPad, how much better it would be to have a keyboard with it, oh if only they did such a thing as a keyboard to attach to an iPad, blah blah, plead plead, you get my drift.

Aha see this is where we find out that men are not as thick skinned as we think they are. Or maybe I am just lucky!

(Disclaimer: If there are any men reading this, I am sorry, I did not mean it, I do not really think men are thick skinned, we are all equal.) Now that’s out the way let’s continue…

Now I had been thinking that you could possibly get some sort of contraption that sits on top of your iPad and just had some sort of separation grid, you know, like grid lines in between where the letters are on an iPad. Well that’s the sort of thing I has envisaged. I really was struggling with typing with more than one finger because it just didn’t work. When you are trying to write a blog post or a long email, it is quite annoying using one finger on an iPad because you just….well actually, it just doesn’t really work. Full stop.

So what I was given was a rather nifty gadget that you put your iPad into and it’s now almost like a mini laptop. I think that’s the best way to describe it really. So the actual iPad fits into an upright frame and then there is a joined on keyboard that is horizontal. You can still use your iPad as a touch screen and even use the keyboard on your iPad if you wish to. Quite frankly I don’t know why you would want to though because having it like a laptop makes typing so much easier.

To be honest it did take a little bit of getting used to because its smaller than a laptop obviously but I would say now that I love it and typing is like a dream. I can actually touch type again whilst looking at the screen so I can see what i am typing.

It works via Bluetooth so you don’t have to join it with any cables or anything, you just situated it in it’s little housing and you are good to go.

Now, as with everything, there are a few design faults. Because I like to use emojis, I find it quite frustrating that there is no button for emojis so you need to press a button on the keyboard to enable the iPad keyboard to show in order to use the emoji menu. But on the plus side this is better than a normal laptop where there is no emoji option. The other thing that I find very annoying, as a keen Twitter user, the hashtag button doesn’t work as a hashtag. It just types £ which it shouldn’t. I haven’t read the instructions though as I was just keen to get started with it, so maybe I will be able to look into this.

Overall I am so so happy with this gift though, it is making my life so much easier when it comes to typing. The battery is pretty good too, I have only had to charge it once since I had it.

Ooh another exciting thing, which is pretty cool is that the keyboard lights up in funky colours, you can have pink, blue, green, red or white lights on the buttons, if you want to! So if I want to sit in a pitch black room and do some writing, then I can do! Hmmm….

  1. Hey Fiona! Those little keyboards look like a smashing idea and if I used my iPad more I’d probably have one too! Also, with the £ sign thing, I remember on a couple of my old computers the @ and ” used to be swapped around so maybe try the key that should be £ and see if that comes up with the # sign? I hope that makes some kind of sense! xx

  2. This is such a clever idea, Fiona! You have turned your iPad into a mini laptop, I love it! It’s so fiddly to type on an iPad so an additional keyboard makes sense, I imagine it makes life so much easier! It’s great that you can still use the emoji feature, even though it is on the screen. I always reply to comments on my computer and there are no emojis which is annoying (I love emojis, he he!). Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I love that the keyboard lights up with pretty colours too! Yay! ❤ xx
