Today we’re talking about a paw-some UK holiday destination and diving into the enchanting beauty of Grasmere and the Lake District! If you’re seeking a dog-friendly haven with jaw-dropping landscapes, look no further. Situated slap bang in the heart of the Lake District national Park, Grasmere is the perfect base for exploring the Lakes and has enough beautiful scenery to have the dogs’ tails wagging with excitement!
Dog friendly accommodation in the Lake District
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay that can accommodate you and your dogs, Grasmere’s got you covered! It was easy to find a dog friendly cottage in a perfect location for our adventures. Despite only booking about four months before our holiday we were faced with a pretty impressive choice. We opted for a lovely cow-barn conversion about a mile from the village of Grasmere and overlooking the lake – the views were amazing! So whether you’re looking for dog-friendly, family-friendly or just for couples , we’re confident you’ll find somewhere that takes your fancy.

Hiking trails for four legs and two
Lace up your hiking boots and grab those leads – Grasmere’s hiking trails are a treat for everyone!! We were a little limited with our walks due to Duke’s arthritis so no hikes up Scafell Pike for us but we were still able to enjoy some beautiful scenic rambles. By the way, did you know that Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England, measuring a staggering 978 metres (3209 feet) high. My overthinking brain is now wondering who actually measured it!! We took a few more relaxed, yet enjoyable walks, still able to soak in the sweeping views of the Lake District. There’s something for everyone in the Lakes, from gentle strolls to challenging hikes, the trails cater for every skill level, as well as canine enthusiasm.

Lake Views
If I had to choose a favourite lake in the Lake District, it would definitely be Grasmere Lake. It’s just so pretty and steals the show with its tranquil beauty and the stunning landscape surrounding it. Our four-legged explorers couldn’t resist dipping their paws into the clear waters as we took in the postcard-worthy scenes. Dog-friendly lake walks and picnics on the shores are the pawfect recipe for a relaxing day out. It’s a pretty tall statement to make but ALL the lakes in the Lake District are stunning. They possess a quality that sets them apart from ordinary lakes. Their waters glisten with a clarity and purity from being filtered through the craggy embrace of the surrounding mountains. The air carries a freshness that seems to be infused into the very essence of the water. Even if you’re not a wild water swimmer I guarantee you’ll be very tempted to take the plunge into their crisp, refreshing depths.

William Wordsworth and Grasmere
Grasmere is the former home of poet William Wordsworth, and exploring his heritage is a must-do. You can visit Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth’s creativity flourished. Looking around Grasmere, it’s not surprising to find out that Wordsworth described it as “The loveliest spot that man hath ever found.” While you’re in the area, you can also visit Allan Bank, which was also a home of Wordsworth and now owned by the National Trust. You can also take a trip to Rydal Mount where Wordsworth lived from 1813, until his death at the age of 80 in 1850. It’s possible to walk from Grasmere to Rydal Mount and part of your journey will include the intriguing ‘coffin walk.’ This is a twisting and sometimes steep walk, which coffin-bearers had to travel from Rydal village to the nearest church, St Oswald at Grasmere.

Exploring the Lake District
Grasmere is your gateway to the wider Lake District, and we couldn’t resist branching out to nearby destinations. From Ambleside’s charming streets and famous ‘bridge house’ to Windermere’s majestic beauty, the serenity of Buttermere, the impressive stone circle at Castlerigg and even a sandy beach. Grasmere really is the perfect base for a Lake District holiday as it’s easy to get to pretty much where ever you want to go. Gentle warning – some of the routes to some of the places may take you through the mountains and some of the roads are very high and very narrow – check your maps before you set off! Plan your day trips and make the most of your time there for a complete Lake District experience.

There you have it, fellow adventurers – Grasmere and the Lake District are a dog-loving traveler’s dream come true! The combination of pet-friendly accommodations, breathtaking hikes, stunning lake views, and literary history make Grasmere a hotspot for memorable escapades.
